What is a Doodle?
Doodles are a designer (AKA hybrid) dog that is the product of crossing a Poodle to other breeds, often for the purpose of generating a low or no-shedding dog that has the hypoallergenic coat of a Poodle. Poodles can be mixed with a wide range of other breeds, but the most common are:
- Goldendoodle: Bred to a Golden Retriever. The primary goal in creating Goldendoodles is to create a friendly, playful dog with a personality similar to Golden Retriever but low-shedding and more color and size combinations. Goldendoodles are generally very friendly, good family pets, and easy to care for. They're very smart, easily trainable, and often used as service or therapy dogs.
- Labradoodle: Bred to a Labrador Retriever. Two of the most popular breeds in the world, both of which come in a variety of colors. Also a common breed used for service and therapy dogs.
- Aussiedoodle: Bred to an Australian Shepherd. Australian Shepherd shed a lot, so mixing with a Poodle can significantly reduce shedding. Australian Shepherds are often popular for their merle and tri-color coats and make a good personality mix with Poodles.
- Bernedoodle: Bred to a Bernese Mountain dog. Also commonly have tri-color coats that make them popular, and have mild-mannered, easy-going, and affectionate personalities.
Depending on their generation and what kind of Poodle is used, they can come in a wide variety of sizes and colors.
